Pla Goong

Pla Goong, พล่ากุ้ง (Spicy Shrimp Salad), is a popular herb laden salad dish. Pla Goong  is spicy, refreshing, quick and easy beyond belief to make. The dish uses fresh peppermint leaves, kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass to enhance the flavor. The spiciness comes from both fresh chili and roasted chili paste. Pla Goong can be made with parboiled or grilled shrimp. Either way it is delicious. The larger the shrimp, the better, though.

I loved to cook this dish whenever I was craving for a hot spicy food. You know what. The best  part is pla goong is naturally low in calories and fat. So I can have it as much and as often as I want. Just have to be careful of my cholesterol level :-(.

If you love to burn your throat, I am sure Pla Goong will be a perfect starter for you.

Here I am sharing with you my authentic and easy Pla Goong  recipe.

Ingredients
200 grams shrimp
3 tablespoon fish sauce
1/2 tablespoon Thai roasted chili paste
6 chilies, sliced
4-5 small shallots, sliced
1 stalk lemongrass, sliced
5-6 kaffir lime leaves, sliced
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
50 cc. water (for parboiling the shrimp)
some peppermint leaves

Method
1. Bring the water to the boil, add in the shrimp. When the shrimp is half cooked, remove from heat. Dish out, keep the water.
2. In the mixing bowl, mix the rest of ingredient. Add 1 tablespoon of water from parboiling the shrimp. This water will add natural sweetness and dept to the dish.

3. Add the parboiled shrimp to the bowl, toss to combine.

 4. Serve warm with a plate of steamed rice.
