Taste of Siam

Easy Thai Recipes and beyond

Thailand has a long dessert tradition, with too many wonderful sweet treats to list. They come in many shapes, sizes, colors and flavors : sweet and salty, soft and crunchy, fancy and plain. They are regarded as snacks to be enjoyed during any time of the day.

Many Thai desserts appearance mimic nature : flowers, fruits, vegetables or animals. There are handmade bird/ flower shaped dumplings filled with minced chicken, flower shaped jasmine cookies, mock pomegranate seed in coconut syrup and so on. They are not only cute, but also adorable and extremely delicious. Thais often buy these savory delicacies to take to their friends or to have on hand at home for visitors, while tourists stock up to bring souvenir for family back home. If you ever been to Thailand, don't forget to pick one for yourself, and when you need a rest, find a tranquil spot, unwrap your treasure and savor the shapes of nature.

There are so many things that should come in size XL., e. g., computer screen, fridge, your pay check, etc. But at snack time, smaller really is better. Small sized snack will satisfy you but still leave room for the next meal.

I love to cook mini snack for my 9 year old son, Koshi, who would eat the moment he gets home from school straight through dinner. Koshi is almost as tall as I am, and as thin as a rail, so I don't want to deny him food. Therefore, I try my best to keep his snack small, fresh and healthy as much as I can. Pansib, fried puff with pork filling is one of my go to after school snack recipes.

Many of Thai dishes has originated in China. Technically, they are Chinese. There are so many overlapped, but Thai cooking has its own interpretation of similar dishes, and with an array of unique ingredients not found in China. Take the expansive menu of traditional Chinese food, infuse it with local flavors and cooking styles and you have something that is distinctively Thai and utterly delicious.

Thailand has produced one of the world best rice and made over a dozen of delicious rice crackers variety. Thai rice crackers are all known and loved by most Thais. They usually can be found everywhere from supermarkets, flea markets and many fine dinning restaurants . However, they are not generally family dish which people make at home. Though it is possible that the dish has began in Northeastern region as a way of  repurposing old, leftover sticky rice in the pre-microwave days.

Shrimp is one of my favorite foods to eat and photograph. I love their texture and color and that there are so many different ways you can cook them. Today I wrapped the shrimp with some egg noodles, then deep fry them. This recipe is called "Goong Sarong" . Goong means shrimp and Sarong  is a large tube or length of fabric, often wrapped around the waist and worn by men and women throughout Southern part of Thailand. So the name derived from the fact that the noodles were wrapped around the shrimp, just like they were wearing sarong.

Today recipe is Thai Style Bird Shaped Dumplings (จีบไทยตัวนก).  These adorable dumplings are more than cute -- they are absolutely delicious. The dumpling is soft and light while the stuffing is rich, juicy with an exotic aroma. Most Thai people love dumplings, especially those with beautiful shape likes Chor Muang or these bird shaped dumplings. They are tasty and healthy and are the pretty snack that will rise to any occasion.

There is no frozen Thai style dumplings entered Japan market at this moment and I have been craving for these tasty dumplings for a long time. So yesterday I decided to attempt it at home and enjoyed this wonderful snack with my family. I speak from experience, making these adorable dumplings is not as difficult as it looks. With a small tong, you can whip them up pretty fast.

If you have been a regular visitor to my blog, you must have known by now that I have a clear obsession with snack. In Bangkok, where I was born and raised, it was so easy to grab some delicious dirt cheap snacks from busy street stalls in almost every street corner. From crispy wonton, fried sweet potato balls, dim sum, fresh or preserved fruit, there was limitless choices of snacks.  So I usually spent my afternoon eating snacks and really got used to having snack whenever I feel like.

Today is another beautiful winter day.  It is so still, the snow that fell last night has stayed on the trees, covering each and every branch in white. It is really cold, freezing actually, but the snow on the ground and sunshine--- this is a very pretty scene.

And.....it is only January 28. We will be having many more days of winter around here.

Very very hot summer has almost been over (?). Autumn is approaching and with it the whole atmosphere has turned a bit gloomy. However, it also offers a treat for taste buds as the vast variety of delicious seasonal fruit and vegetables fill up the stores. I love autumn and I personally think autumn is all about eating.

One of the best autumn comfort foods I absolutely love is sweet potatoes. Do you remember that I also wrote about Japanese sweet potatoes several months ago?   Maybe not... So I will tell you again that they taste so tasty. Apart from making tempura and Japanese desserts, I often use them to make Khanom Kai Nok Krata.

I love spring rolls and I think they are one of really tasty and economical snacks. However, I don't make them often because they are deep fried.  I find making deep frying foods is  absolutely messy. So whenever I make spring rolls, it is really a special treat for my kid.

Today I am sharing with you my delicious Thai spring rolls recipe.

When it comes to snack, I love anything deep fried. Seriously, anything. It can be fried chicken, french fries, youtiao (Chinese donuts),  onion ring, rice cracker ,chips, etc.

Deep frying may not be the most calories-poor way to prepare foods, but it certainly produce some of the world 's tastiest. Who doesn't love deep fried foods?

Despite a strong love for it, I hardly deep frying, because it is so hectic and really messy. And it's pain to dispose the leftover oil. So I find myself deep fry only for special occasions except for today.

Curry Puff is one of Thai dishes  influenced by Indian cuisine(if I am not mistaken). It is a crispy snack sized pastry filled with "thick curry", that can be found in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

When I was in Kuala Lumpur, I was surprised to see this delicious pastry in many Indian food stalls.  To my eyes, Indian puffs looked exactly the same as Thai's. However, their taste weren't.  While Indian curry puffs are usually spicy, Thai curry puffs tend to be sweet savory.
