Taste of Siam

Easy Thai Recipes and beyond

Thailand has a long dessert tradition, with too many wonderful sweet treats to list. They come in many shapes, sizes, colors and flavors : sweet and salty, soft and crunchy, fancy and plain. They are regarded as snacks to be enjoyed during any time of the day.

Many Thai desserts appearance mimic nature : flowers, fruits, vegetables or animals. There are handmade bird/ flower shaped dumplings filled with minced chicken, flower shaped jasmine cookies, mock pomegranate seed in coconut syrup and so on. They are not only cute, but also adorable and extremely delicious. Thais often buy these savory delicacies to take to their friends or to have on hand at home for visitors, while tourists stock up to bring souvenir for family back home. If you ever been to Thailand, don't forget to pick one for yourself, and when you need a rest, find a tranquil spot, unwrap your treasure and savor the shapes of nature.

I have to admit I don't really like Med Kanoon. It is a bit too sweet in my taste but my family loves it, especially my kid. So I made it pretty often.  Med Kanoon literary means jackfruit seeds. It derived from the fact that each dessert has the size of a jackfruit seed. Moreover, Med Kanoon has the nutty flavor similar to jackfriut seeds. (Yes, in Thailand boiled jackfruit seeds are common and pretty popular snack.)

Today recipe is Kanom Alua (ขนมอาลัว), eggless Thai dessert treat. Kanom Alua is made of only four ingredients : coconut milk, all purpose flour, mung bean flour and sugar, yet utterly delicious and addicting. It is very popular in any dessert table, New Year's, family gathering and often bought for gift or souvenir. Khanom Alua is a sweet savory, creamy dessert, perfect for both kids and adults.

I present to you Khao Niew Kaew (sweet shiny coconut sticky rice, ข้าวเหนียวแก้ว)   , a really popular dessert in Thai cuisine.  It is made with Thai glutinous rice (sweet rice, sticky rice, ข้าวเหนียว) , coconut milk, sugar and often colored with natural color wistfully obtained from pandan leaves (ใบเตย) for bright green color and fragrance.  But the color is up to what you like and what you can find at where you live. I colored my Khao Niew  Kaew with red cabbage juice and it gave me light purple color which was so pretty without leaving any smell or even undesirable veggie flavors at all.

I will be off to Tottori prefecture with my family for a few days so I 'd like to keep this post short.

Today recipe is Thai Shaved Ice, นํ้าแข็งไส, one of my all time favorite desserts. It is  so damned easy to make but super delicious nonetheless. I added grass jelly(เฉาก๊วย), palm seed in syrup(ลูกตาลเชื่อม) and sweet corn kennels but you can try making your own version with almost anything you want. The Thai Shaved Ice vendors in Bangkok usually sweeten their Thai Shaved Ice with syrup, coconut syrup or Red Hales Blue Boy syrup. Again, you can choose whatever you like.

Tako (Mung Bean Jelly with Coconut Cream), ตะโก้, is one of the most delicious and common Thai desserts you will find almost everywhere in Bangkok. In Thailand, Tako is usually made in a bite size cup, which made from fresh aromatic pandan leaves.  The dessert has 2 layers: a jelly custard on the bottom with coconut cream on top. The ingredients for the custard are various; they can be corn kennels, taro or water chestnuts.

and delicious coconutty Thai desserts. The name Khanom Tuay literary means "dessert in a bowl" in Thai derived from the fact that it is made in a small bite size porcelain cup.
The dessert has  2 layers: the sweet chewy coconut milk based layer on the bottom with the thick coconut cream on top.

Mango, known as "Ma-muang" in Thai is one of Thailand's premier tropical fruits and Thailand produces some of the most delicious mangoes in the world.

Thais are very fond of mango, the green and ripe for anytime snack. We like to thinly slice the green mango and dip the crisp slices in the sweet dip made of fish sauce and palm sugar. Another popular dish is green mango spicy salad or "Yam Ma-muang" in Thai. It is the tasty salad that will blow you away with its taste bud awakening flavors.

Pumpkin Balls in Coconut Syrup or "Boa Loi" in Thai is one of the most famous Thai desserts. This dessert is widely available ; it can be found a range places from street vendors, restaurants and gourmet section in supermarkets. Boa Loi ,which literally  means floating lotus  is addictive. The soft and sticky rice balls served in warm , mildly sweet coconut syrup are tempting. You will ask for more.

Flower Shaped Jasmine Cookies or Gleeb Lamduan is very famous dessert, which you can easily find in most supermarkets in Bangkok.

However, I have hardly ever tried these wonderful fragrant cookies.  I usually bought them for a gift or a souvenir.  Maybe its beautiful shape and wonderful smelling made me hesitate to have it.

Mock Pomegranate Seed in Coconut Syrup (Tub Tim Krob) is very famous dessert in Thailand. Named for its red pomegranate seed- like color.  It is the dessert that commonly sold by street vendors.

It was one of my favorites when I was younger.  In a hot and humid country like Thailand, nothing beats the icy cold and sweet dessert that soothes the throat and cools down the body.
